WriteGirl is coming to Pasadena!

WriteGirl is coming to the Pasadena Playhouse Sunday, May 3 for a playwriting workshop and a special 6pm benefit performance– PlayWriteGirl. WriteGirl is an L.A.-based non-profit that pairs professional women writers with teenage girls to mentor them in their writing and self-expression. I’m a volunteer.

WriteGirl offers monthly workshops, each focusing on a different writing genre. May’s workshop is Scene and Dialog. (At last year’s Scene and Dialog session, one of our guest screenwriters was Diablo Cody, who wrote Juno)

In addition to working with our regular group of mentees (from all over the L.A. area), a good number of girls from local Pasadena schools will join us for the day and participate in the workshop.

The workshop takes place in the afternoon. I’m always amazed at what happens in a few short hours — the girls start with an experiment that helps spark the idea for a scene. By the end of the day, there’s a complete scene. Professional actors perform the scenes and offer their feedback, from working actor to writer.

Think back to when you were in high school, and your own aspirations (or lack of aspirations) and the support you did or did not get to pursue them. Imagine being led though a course of writing experiments and developing a scene. Then imagine what it would be like to see your own work performed by well-known actors. If you’re a girl attending highschool in Los Angeles (with a 50% graduation rate) — it’s events like these — plus having a mentor who meets with you once a week — that make sure you graduate and get into college. (WriteGirl’s graduation and go to college rate: 100%)

And you, dear reader, are invited to attend the performance following the workshop.
