a conversation I just had

Doc M, reading about electronics specials: “8 gigabyte thumb drive. 50 bucks.”

Susan: “Wow.”

Doc M: “Moore’s law is alive and well.”

Susan: “Moore’s law has been lifting weights and is really buff.”

Let’s just hope he hasn’t been taking steroids.

BTW, who the heck is Moore?!?

This is geek trivia that’s become sorta mainstream. Gordon Moore founded Intel, and in a 1965 paper, said that the number of transistors on a chip doubles every two years. That’s Moore’s Law. So when a thumb drive comes out with a ton of storage for a low price, or how this year’s crop of computers are so! much! faster! than last year’s, geeks utter exclamations about Moore’s Law.

Aha! I’ve heard of the concept, but didn’t know it was attributed to Moore. Now I’ll be able to speak geek!
